It is not in my son’s nine years old, however, my son has gotten myopic, and it is real myopia. I got the news that my son’s eyesight was not good just before the labour day holiday. The school arranged the activity of checking the eyesight for the pupils. I was informed of the result that my son’s eyesight was only around 0.6 and consequently of the requirement we should take him during the holiday to have an eyesight recheck in the eye healthcare center located in this school. It was not until the last day of the holiday I took my son to that center. However, the door of the healthcare centre was closed and perhaps the staff also enjoeyed their holidays. Therfore the recheck was not performed. At that time I was very busy, so I got the idea that I or his mother could bring him to the neighbouring hospital to have a check during the summer holiday. Two months passed away with our careless thought that shortsight was not a real problem for the hospital and it could also be curable. In May of this year, we bought a new computer. My son was under a spell in playing internet games in the weekend or at the time when we went out. Nevertheless, we have not paid enough attention to the serious side effect of playing games.we always consider that the myopia of the children can be well cured because we thought the worst result was only a pseudo myopia.
The summer vacation came; I took my son to the hospital for maternal and children healthcare. I was worried by the result of checking eyesight. My son’s eyesight was downward to the level of 0.4 of the right eye and 0.3 of the left eye. More seriously, the doctor told me that my son has gotten real shortsighted! I was astonished by the result and asked the doctor why the child could also become myopic during so short period of time. The doctor said there are a great amount of children who have been myopic and no doubt it was the effect of being addicted to computer, playing games, and watching TV. Then I asked further whether the real myopia could be cured? The doctor replyed real myopia is incurable before the age of 18; Only after the age of 18 the myopia can be recoverd by eye operation; Now the effective way of keeping the eyesight is to have a pair of galsses and you should check your son’s eyesight periodically in order to prevent the eyesight from further worsening.
Afterwards we bought a spectacle for him. He usually doesn’t wear his spectacle. Sometimes he would wear it only when using the computer. However, I have an untold feeling towards my son when I see him. Should we as parents hold the whole responsibility for our son’s being myopic? Now he is only in the grade three in the elementary school, however, I had been in the grade two in senior high school when I got shortsighted.
