Cultural web

Cultural web is analytic tool that can be used to interpret a company strategy leading to success or failure, thus before taking a strategy, some essential aspects might be analysed, consequently an informed decision can be reached, avoiding a rush to take an inappropriate strategy.

When mentioning the notion of cultural web, we usually relate it to several aspects, including symbols, power, organizational structure, control systems, rituals and routines, stories, and finally the paradigm that is formed to combine the former six elements.

Symbols  Symbol is related to the logo, title etc. If someone in an organization owns a title, there would be something attached to it, for example, a head of a section who occupies a spatial single room, a dedicated assistant, these might be considered as important signal for a person in the organization. The more shining the symbol, the more a person would have vested interests.

Power  The meaning of power is very easily to understand. It means the position. The higher someone is in an organization, the more power one would possess. It is obvious the power in an organization is the goal for most of people to pursue. It is highly likely the power will bring the benefits and other welfares that may accrue to someone either being represented by money or physical aspect as well as the spirit award.

Organizational structure. Organizational structure determines the hierarchy flowing down from the top to the bottom. Generally in the business the chairman in a board of director may be considered the highest position. A suitable organizational structure will facilitate the implementation of the strategy in a harmonious way.

Control systems   Control systems are in place to ensure the achievement of the goal set by the management. It includes a number of aspects such as financial control, performance control, production control, quality control, all of which are considered fundamental and crucial to the success of an organization.  

Rituals and routines  It is related to the behavior and action of people when they do day-to-day work.. Something that could do or not is ingrained in the mind of the members of the organization, therefore the behavior code in a unit might be naturally observed without extra monitoring.

Stories. A business or an organization must have its story that could be told outside and valued by people. It relates the history of a unit and may be time-honored, in particular for those that have established themselves in the market place or society.

Finally the paradigm  The above elements, if considered together, will develop a model of organization which has its own style, that either could be aggressive or reactive. The paradigm embodies the image of an organization as a whole.

Cultural web is contextual analysis which may give the insight to the decision makers and illuminate the flair in a more holistic way. The above depiction is rather succinct, however if used in business environment, it will be more useful than a simple narrative. From considering the complicate background around the business, the insight deriving from analyzing the cultural web must be meaningful, particularly for the strategic management involving in change.
