It was the second time that my son took part in the grade examination for bamboo flute on Sunday afternoon, Otc 18, an auspicious day. About ten days ago I was formally informed by the music training centre, a branch of Wuhan Conservatory of Music, of the date when the grade exam would be held. The stated time for bamboo flute was set at around 5:00pm. My son and I got there about half an hour ahead. The grade exam had lasted over two hours since it began at 2:00pm. There was a bulletin board on which the regulation and requirements guiding the candidates to follow through were detailed. However, in fact much could be different from the notice as we didn’t know the detailed regulations in advance. Quite likely it might only be a form aimed to enforce the atmosphere of exam and its formality as well as the authority at least for those outsiders. I could understand it because to some extent I took my son to this type of exam before and have enquired some information from the clerk working as help-desk.

There were over fifty candidates in total according to the sheet list, the age runs from less than five to over sixty, and the grade attempted from the first grade to tenth grade, the highest level in social art grade exam for the non-professionals. The highest grade(the tenth grade) was attacked by two old men( I guessed it must be man) who play two-stringed Chinese fiddle(二胡). The melodious sound of Erhu(二胡) came out from the second floor as we lounged before the waiting area. Later on I surmised it must be performed by the persons who attempted the tenth grade. In my view the grade ten is categorized to most superior ambit which necessitates quite a lot of skills and art talents. I don’t know how long they have spent to clamber to the pinnacle of the art as the amateur.

A little difference from last time when my son came here was we found a boy who has the same age with my son would take part in the bamboo flute exam. He would attempt the grade three whereas for my son grade four. He was accompanied by his parents. For fear of their child who might feel fidgeted when playing, his mother asked him to play at the gate first. When hearing his playing, I pointed out some drawbacks and demonstrated it for him. Frankly speaking, comparing with my son’s last exam for grade three, his technique could be considered inferior much. Nonetheless, he played better for one of the three musics he would attempt later on. His mother said he should play his best music first, or else, the examiner might stop him if he played the worse first. I thought her consideration was sapient. It was true he passed the grade three by his best-playing music. When it was in the course of playing, the examiner stopped him and gave him the pass record without playing the following.

My son’s exam followed him, and I didn’t worry his playing. At least I could make certain my son would pass the exam. As to the extent to which he might obatin excellent, satisfactory, or average, it would be at the disposal of the examiner’s assessment and my son’s on site show. Only several minutes later, my son came out from the exam room with an excellent comment by the examiner.

In fact, during this exam, the examiner tended to be generous with the candidates’ performance. Most of the candidates were given excellent result.

After passing the grade four of bamboo flute, I set the next goal for my son to attempt grade six. I want to skim the grade five anyway. Also I promised to my son I will attempt the grade six with my son next time.
